This course is a nationally recognised qualification with Teaching Qualifications UK (TQUK), who are an Ofqual recognised Awarding organisation. The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training will enable learners to work in a teaching role and progress on to a broader teaching qualification. This qualification replaces the old CTLLS course.

The qualification is suitable for those delivering/wanting to deliver education and training in any learning environment.

Is this the right teaching qualification for me? 

The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training will enable you to work in a teaching role and progress on to a broader teaching qualification. This qualification is suitable for trainee teachers, those experienced in a teaching role and those working as assessors who wish to gain a teaching qualification.

Learners who successfully complete this qualification will have a fundamental understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher/trainer in relation to legislation, equality, diversity, inclusivity and meeting the needs of learners. They will be able to use initial and diagnostic assessments and plan and deliver inclusive teaching and learning. They will also be able to assess learning and use appropriate resources to support effective learning.

Course Requirements 

There are no formal prerequisite qualifications that you must have prior to undertaking this qualification, however the following is advisable:

  • You have a good level of written and spoken English in order to write assignments and carry out teaching practice
  • You have a good level of Numeracy understanding
  • You are IT literate, as most of the course requires the use of IT
  • You have access to a computer, printer, scanner, phone and the internet

You do however need:

  • Access to 30 hours teaching practice – or will work with your tutor to get this
  • To be at least 19 years of age 

Course Overview 

The course covers preparation, planning and evaluation skills and techniques. Learners will also gain teaching delivery skills and participate in teaching. The course is aimed at getting learners to reflect and evaluate their teaching role and develop their teaching skills further. The 4 units must be completed to make up 33 credits. These will be fully explained and resourced through our e-learning platform, so that students can then complete their assignments/evidence pieces at their own convenience. There will also be 3 one-hour lesson observations. So in general the course comprises of around 6 assignments/evidence pieces, 30 hours teaching practice and 3 assessed observations.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Understand roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
  • Learn to plan to meet the needs of learners in education and training
  • Develop skills to deliver education and training
  • Assess learners in education and training
  • Use resources for education and training
  • Understand how to plan and deliver inclusive sessions
  • Understand effective teaching practices

You will need to provide evidence that you have met all the learning outcomes required for this course. This will include:

  • Assignments: to evidence the knowledge based criteria. You will complete your unit assignments with full support and mentoring from your tutor
  • Practice Requirements: there is a requirement for a minimum of 30 hours of teaching practice for this qualification. Teaching hours and lesson observations will be carried out at your chosen place (e.g. private training provider, School, College etc.) with a verified assessor (e.g. a fully qualified teacher) observing you. You will need to arrange this but we can support you with how to do this.
  • Observation Requirements: there is a requirement for a minimum of three observations of practice.

An example of work you will need to complete for the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training is: 30 hours of teaching practice (teaching you have done 3 months prior to starting the course may be taken into account), 3 lesson observations (with lesson plans) and some assignments.

You will be fully guided and supported by your tutor on the work you will need to carry out to complete this qualification.

How long does this course take to complete? 

The Total Qualification Time (as set out by TQUK) is 330 hours. This course is a distance learning course and so can be completed at your own convenience. You will be fully guided and supported by your own personal tutor and you have up to a year to complete the course.

Course Accreditation 

This course is approved and regulated by TQUK. TQUK are an Ofqual recognised Awarding organisation, providing a wide range of vocational qualifications to FE Colleges and private training providers. As an Ofqual recognised Awarding organisation, all of TQUK’s qualifications are guaranteed to conform to a high standard. This qualification has been mapped to the relevant Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS), National Occupational Standards (NOS), and sits on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF)

On successful completion of this course, you will achieve the Ofqual recognised, Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training.

What could this qualification lead to? 

You can progress from the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training directly into employment as a teacher in the further education sector. On completion of this qualification you may choose to undertake further study; qualifications you could progress to include:

  • Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET)

These qualifications can help you to progress in teaching or training in a wide range of organisations in the lifelong learning sector. These include:

  • Public sector organisations
  • Private sector organisations
  • Further Education, Adult and Community Education

Will I have help during the course? 

Yes, you will be provided with the information for your tutor in your course confirmation and welcome email. Your tutor will be there to support and guide you throughout the duration of your course.

Where does the training take place? 

This is a distance learning course and so will take place in the comfort of your own home and in your chosen training school. All material for your qualification will be uploaded to an e-learning platform. This can be accessed from anywhere, provided you have access to the internet. However, your 30 teaching hours and lesson observations will be held at your chosen place.

Do I need to attend anywhere to complete this course? 

No. This is a distance learning course and so can be completed at your convenience, in the comfort of your own home. You will be fully supported by your tutor through all the assignments. However, your 30 teaching hours and lesson observations will be held at your chosen place.

Where can I do my teaching hours and lesson observations? 

You will need to contact a private training provider, local School or College (for example) to see if you can help support their classes and gain your teaching hours and lesson observations. The teacher you work with will need to be a fully qualified teacher. Teachers are often more than happy to have trainee teachers supporting their classes. Your tutor can help you with any information you need prior to making contact.

Yes, we offer the Level 3, 4 and 5 teacher training courses and all of these are taught by the same tutor. We strongly advise students complete level 3 and/or 4 and level 5 in order to have a successful career in teaching.

Where will I be able to seek employment after completing the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training? 

This qualification will entitle you to seek employment as a teacher or trainer in the public or private sector organisations or further, adult or community education.
