The aim of the Level 3 Certificate in Understanding Mental Health Care is to meet the needs of individuals who support people with mental health problems but who may not be mental health professionals. This course is also great for employers or employees who feel that they would like to broaden their knowledge in mental health so as to support people who they employ or work with. The qualification develops learners knowledge of the legal, policy and service framework in mental health; the principles for implementing duty of care in health, social care or children’s and young people's settings; mental well-being and health promotion, problems and interventions; care and support planning and risk management in mental health. This is an Ofqual regulated qualification and so sits on the regulated qualifications framework.

We will look into the key components of mental well-being and delve into the issues that surround mental health. The course will help you to become aware of the attitudes that are prevalent when mental health is discussed and what impacts these can have on an individual and on those around them. We will look into the risk factors associated with mental health and also legislation that we need to be aware of.  The course will give you a good, all round understanding of mental health and mental health care, enabling you to recognise concerns and also identify where we can make changes to support our own mental health and that of others.

According to the definition outlined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2016,

‘Health’ is referred to as a “state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease of infirmary.”

The WHO also explains that:

‘Mental health’ is the “state of wellbeing in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”

It can be more complicated to define poor mental health, as there are various explanations of the meaning of mental ill health, each of which can be influenced by personal opinion, making it very difficult to give a clear explanation.

Poor mental health can be described as:

“When a person’s thoughts, emotions or behaviour are so abnormal as to cause suffering to himself, herself, or other people”

This course will enable you to recognise that mental health is vital for overall health and well-being and why it must be recognised as so.

This Understanding Mental Health Care course will also provide you with some tools you can use to develop and practise the concepts of mindfulness, which can be a powerful support when working on strengthening and supporting mental health.
