The Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) is designed to give people the knowledge and confidence to teach in the post-19 sector, whatever their industry/subject. This could be as a trainer in the private training industry or as a teacher/lecturer in further education, for example.

This course is an Ofqual recognised qualification with Training Qualifications UK (TQUK), who are a regulated Awarding organisation.

This qualification replaces the old PTLLS course.

Who is this qualification for?

The Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) is a government approved qualification for those interested in a teaching career in the private or further education sector or for those who have recently started teaching. The qualification provides a sound introduction to teaching.

This course is designed to equip a wide range of people with the requisite skills and knowledge required to fulfill a teaching role:

  • For those who work, or want to work as teachers/trainers in the further education and skills sector

  • For those who are not in a teaching/training role, or who have just started a teaching/training role

  • For those who want a short qualification to enable them to make career choices

Is this the right teaching qualification for me?

The Level 3 Award in Education and Training will enable you to enter teaching employment and progress on to a broader teaching qualification. It is designed for teaching in the post-19 sector.

This qualification is suitable for both experienced practitioners who would like to secure an Ofqual recognised qualification as well as those new to teaching.

It is the same level as the Gateway Award in Education and Training (also taught through Gateway Workshops). However, this course is Ofqual recognised (meaning it is an official qualification) and is regulated by TQUK. It is therefore seen as the more professional level 3 teaching qualification.

Course Requirements:

There are no formal prerequisite qualifications that you must have prior to undertaking this qualification, however the following is advisable:

  • You have a good level of written and spoken English in order to write assignments and carry out a micro teach

  • You have a good level of Numeracy understanding

  • You are IT literate, as most of the course requires the use of IT

  • You have access to a computer, printer, scanner, phone and the internet

  • You are at least 19 years of age

Course Overview:

The qualification covers the knowledge and skills required by teachers/trainers in the further education and training skills sector, including:

  • The roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training

  • Understanding inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education and training

  • Understanding assessment in education and training

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Identify effective teaching practices

  • Plan and deliver inclusive sessions

  • Select engaging learning resources

  • Use appropriate teaching methods

  • Identify the characteristics of effective assessment and feedback

What will I need to do to complete the course?

You will need to provide evidence that you have met all the learning outcomes required for this course. This will include:

  • A 15 minute microteach: You will be fully supported by your tutor on how to do this
  • Assignments: to evidence the knowledge based criteria. You will complete your 3 unit assignments – again fully supported and guided

An example of work you will need to complete for the Level 3 Award in Education and Training is a 15 minute micro teach and 3 online assignments 

You will be fully guided and mentored by your tutor on the work you will need to carry out to complete this qualification.

How long does this course take to complete?

The Total Qualification Time (as set out by TQUK) is 120 hours. This course is a distance learning course and so can be completed at your own convenience. You have up to a year to complete the course.

What could this qualification lead to?

Learners can progress from the Level 3 Award in Education and Training directly into teaching or a facilitating role in the further education sector.

On completion of this qualification the learner may choose to undertake further study; the progression courses being:

  • Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training and/or

  • Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training

These qualifications can help you to progress in teaching/training and/or support roles in a wide range of organisations in the lifelong learning sector. These include:

  • Public sector organisations

  • Private sector organisations

  • Further Education, Adult and Community Education

Will I have help during the course?

Yes, you will be provided with the information for your tutor in your course confirmation and welcome email. Your tutor will be there to support and guide you throughout the duration of your course.

This is a distance learning course and so will take place in the comfort of your own home and in your chosen training school. All material for your qualification will be uploaded to an e-learning platform. This can be accessed from anywhere, provided you have access to the internet.

Do I need to attend anywhere to complete this course?

No. This is a distance learning course and so can be completed at your convenience, in the comfort of your own home. You will be fully supported by your own personal tutor through all the assignments.

Can I continue teacher training courses with you and the same tutor?

Yes, we offer the level 4 and 5 teacher training courses online and both of these are taught by the same tutor. We strongly advise students complete level 3 and/or 4 and level 5 in order to have a successful career in teaching.

Where will I be able to seek employment after completing the Level 3 Award in Education and Training?

This qualification will entitle you to seek employment as a teacher or trainer in the public or private sector organisations or further, adult or community education.
