The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training is a nationally recognised qualification with Teaching Qualifications UK (TQUK), who are an Ofqual regulated Awarding organisation. The course provides the knowledge, understanding and skills to teach, and develop a range of personal qualities and attributes required for teaching, assessing and supporting learners. The course covers wider professional practice, theories, principles and models in education as well as teaching, learning and assessment in education. This qualification replaces the old DTLLS course.

Who is this qualification for?

The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training is for anyone looking to teach in the further education sector, or within their own specialist role. You can also progress from this to gain a full teaching qualification (QTLS) in the post-16 sector. This course is suitable whatever area/subject/sector you are looking to teach. It is suitable for:

  • Those who work or who want to work as teachers/trainers in the further education and skills sector.
  • Those who are not in a teaching/training role or who have just started a teaching/training role.
  • Those who are seeking career progression in their area of work
  • Assessors who want to achieve a teaching/training qualification
  • Those who have completed the Level 3 Award in Education and Training, or Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector, and want to progress further
  • Those who have completed the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training or the Level 4 Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector, and want to progress further
  • Those who have completed Trainer skills or introduction to training qualifications

The course is a natural progression for those learners that have already achieved levels 3 or 4. However, learners with the required experience can also enroll straight on to the level 5 course.

Learners may have already completed the Level 3 Award in Education and Training and/or the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training or have the required experience to be able to enroll onto this course.

Learners will also need:

  • A good level of spoken and written English, Numeracy and ICT skills to meet the requirements of the course
  • Access to the required 100 hours teaching practice whilst on the course
  • To be at least 19 years of age

Is this the right teaching qualification for me?

The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training will enable you to work in a teaching role and progress on to gain full QTLS status (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills). The course will prepare students to teach in a wide range of contexts including further, private, adult or community education or work-based learning. Learners who successfully complete this qualification will take an analytical and practical approach to all aspects of planning, delivering and assessing inclusive teaching and learning. Whilst doing this, learners will embed theories and principles in education and training and demonstrate them in their own teaching practice.

Course Overview

The qualification covers the knowledge and skills required by teachers/trainers in the further education and skills sector, such as:

  • Teaching, learning and assessment in education and training
  • Developing teaching learning and assessment in education and training
  • Theories, principles and models of education and training
  • Wider professional practice and development in education and training

To achieve the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training, learners must achieve a minimum of 120 credits across various units. You be fully guided and supported by your tutor through these units. In general, the course comprises of assignments/evidence pieces, 100 hours teaching practice and 8 assessed observations.

What will I need to do to complete the course?

You will need to provide evidence that you have met all the learning outcomes required for this course. This will include:

  • Assignments: to evidence the knowledge based criteria. You will complete your unit assignments and be fully guided and supported by your tutor
  • Practice Requirements: there is a requirement for a minimum of 100 hours of teaching practice for this qualification. Teaching hours and lesson observations will be carried out at your chosen place (e.g. private training provider, School, College etc.) with a verified assessor (e.g. a fully qualified teacher) observing you. You will need to arrange this but we can support you with how to do this.
  • Observation Requirements: there is a requirement for a minimum of eight observations of practice.

An example of work you will need to complete for the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training is: 100 teaching hours (teaching you have done 3 months prior to starting the course may be taken into account), lesson observations (including lesson plans) and assignments.

You will be fully supported and guided by your tutor throughout the duration of the course and they will be easily contactable should you need their support.

How long does this course take to complete?

The Total Qualification Time (as set out by TQUK) is 1200 hours. This course takes approximately 9 months to a year to complete, depending on the time you have.

Course Accreditation

This course is approved and regulated by TQUK. TQUK are an Ofqual recognised Awarding organisation, providing a wide range of vocational qualifications to FE Colleges and private training providers. As an Ofqual recognised Awarding organisation, all of TQUK’s qualifications are guaranteed to conform to a high standard. This qualification has been mapped to the relevant Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS), National Occupational Standards (NOS), and sits on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) On successful completion of this course, you will achieve the Ofqual recognised, Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET).

What could this qualification lead to?

This qualification allows learners to progress into employment as teachers or trainers, allowing the learner to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status (QTLS) in the post-16 sector, if you choose. The course is nationally accredited (QCF) and Ofqual regulated, gaining you a nationally recognised teaching qualification. This qualification opens doors within further education colleges and enables learners to apply for teaching positions with the confidence that they are already qualified and experienced teachers. You could look to work in any of the following:

Where does the training take place?

This is a distance learning course and so will take place in the comfort of your own home and in your chosen training school. All material for your qualification will be uploaded to an e-learning platform. This can be accessed from anywhere, provided you have access to the internet. However, your 100 teaching hours and lesson observations will be held at your chosen place.

Do I need to attend anywhere to complete this course?

No. This is a distance learning course and so can be completed at your convenience, in the comfort of your own home. You will be fully supported by your tutor through all the assignments. However, your 100 teaching hours and lesson observations will be held at your chosen place.

Where can I do my teaching hours and lesson observations?

You will need to contact a private training provider, local School or College (for example) to see if you can help support their classes and gain your teaching hours and lesson observations. The teacher you work with will need to be a fully qualified teacher. Teachers are often more than happy to have teacher trainers supporting their classes. Your tutor can help you with any information you need prior to making contact.
